I actually have pointed out that high volume(for there width) ridged decked
baidarkas are not well suited to rolling. However they are definitely not
impossible to roll. It is true that several competent hand rollers have
failed to do hand rolls in my boat (they usually blame it on a bad fit) but
they were easily able to roll it up using a paddle as have I. I am no
"hotshot roller" but I have rolled it using a screw roll with a cheapo Euro
paddle or with a wing paddle. Currently I am using a native paddle which is
the easiest to roll with. Any Greenland roll should work as long as it
doesn't require you to "lay back". My point is that with decent technique
you should be able to roll an Aleut boat easily although you might use a
little different technique than you would with a low volume raked cockpit
Greenland boat or the river boat you might have learned in.
