[baidarka] Hooper Bay details

I am currently making a kayak from David Zimmerly's Hooper Bay book and there
are a few details which are not clear in my mind.

1. The deck beam mortises are cut in the gunwales before assembly and the
furtherest fore and aft mortises are slanted downwards (from midships to
bow/stern). I can't see why they slant down, it seems more reasonable that
they would slant up to accommodate the deckbeams between the converging
gunwales.

2. This is a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. Concerning the notched
scarf joint in the keelson. Is the scarf joint cut horizontally i.e. the notch
would appear as a 'Z' shape on the side of the keelson and not the top or
bottom?

3. Another silly question concerning the way Aleut paddles are held. The
business ends of the paddle have one flat side and one ridged side. Which side
pushes against the water when paddling?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
