I have a replica labrador paddle a friend made from Chapelle
that is 11 feet long. It's made of spruce and fairly well
balanced. If I remember correctly he said that the
paddler rests the center portion of the shaft on the cockpit rim( to take
the weight) and uses a rowing motion.
The blades are quite narrow and long, fairly pointed at the tip
with a center ridge on both faces.
There are carved drip rings near the hand position and each blade
also has three pieces of line hanging straight down from
the lower edge which diverts the best part of the water before it has time
to reach the shaft. The line is stiff, about 1/4 inch dia. glued into a
shallow hole drilled into the blades edge. I think baleen or similar
material would have been used on an original model. The pieces are about 2-3
inches long.
(P.S. Despite it's interesting configuration I rarely use the paddle)
