I meant to set this aside for a couple days and see if anyone answered,
but its been more like 30 days. Oops. Hopefully you got replies offlist
and your problem is solved by now. I would not trim the tail.

My answer would be to not worry about the front too much, if the problem
is only exhibited over a couple feet or less of boat. 7/8 inch will make
a difference but it wont be huge, IMO. Others may beg to differ. For the
rear, I would simply consider redoing the ribs over the area that is too
shallow. Or, if its ONLY depth and not breadth that is off, you could
simply install fairing blocks between ribs and keelson.

I'm not sure I have your problem correctly visualized though. You say you
had the braces too high (presumably with frame upside down), but that
would cause your keelson to run over the top edge of the tailfin (which
is actually the bottom), not "cut into it". In other words your hull
would be too deep. But I can only see braces being too low, ie ribs too
shallow, causing the problem as you describe it
