Thanks to all for their input and comments.
Yes, we'd all like speed, but for me the enjoyment of just being on the
water with my wife (of 22 years), without the cell phones, etc of modern
day life is thrilling.
I could not afford to buy a NEW folder, even a Folbot. I can buy a
Chesapeake double kit for $900 shipped, that would be far faster than the
Folbot. The point is the time. I really don't have the TIME right now to
build one. I also am short of funds. However, I have seen a seller on eBay
who has a Greenland II COMPLETE with spray skirt, paddles, everything
EXCEPT PFD's. I thought that if I were able to pick it up for no more than
$1000-1100, it would get me on the water NOW. I can always build something
else LATER. That Chesapeake will run me $2000 fully outfitted... The
Kleppers and Feathercrafts are out of the question as far as cost. I'm
following an auction on a 1980 Aerius II in what looks like VERY good
shape, but I imagine IT will go much higher than it's current $650 bid. For
accessories, the Greenland is a better deal, depending on where it tops out at.
Most beaches on Puget Sound are gravel: they're tough on both fiberglas AND
plastic hulls. I would imagine the Hypalon coated fabric to be more forgiving.
I HAVE paddled a Klepper once, for a short time. It was much different than
the glas boats I'd paddled in the past: it felt slower, though not bad,
just different. Most of what I've read on the web has been positive
regarding the current crop of folding boats. Like everything else, you get
what you pay for, but for now, what I pay for may have to be a compromise...
