I believe one of the best guides to good paddle design is what thousands of
years of development has produced in native paddles. The wide variety of
these suggests that different paddles suit different kinds of boats and the
applications for which they are used.

I'm not coming up with a pat answer here, just a suggestion that we need to
think long and hard about these matters before we try to 'improve' on
traditional paddle types. Neither am I suggesting that improvements are
impossible, given the wonderful new materials we have at our disposal.

For myself, though, the paddle I use has to look the part for me to feel
comfortable with it.
