I am just starting out and want to build my first boat. The Hooper Bay Bering
Sea design appeals to me for a number of reasons. I like the idea of a stable
craft for a beginner like me, also for carrying my 7 year old son. This boat
was apparently built to carry heavy loads in rough weather. The interior is
large and the coaming is high and wide. The drawbacks are that I would like a
boat with which I could use a double paddle and secondly the boat will
probably never carry a 300 lb seal carcas. I believe a double paddle can be
used with this design but its not ideal. I would like to modify some of the
features to make it more appropriate for what I will use it for. Mainly
fishing on inland lakes and sheltered harbours.

Ideally I would like to lower the deck and decrease the diameter and height of
the coaming. As I see it, I could leave the hull dimensions as is and just
lower the deck and coaming, or scale the entire boat down proportionally, or a
combination of the two. I would appreciate any input from people who have
previous experience. For example: 'don't be an idiot; just build a baidarka',
or 'the boat can be modified but watch out for .... problems'.

My copy of Zimmerly's book is dog eared from pawing over it, trying to
understand the construction. I have begun a 3D cumputer model of the frame in
Solidworks and hope to fully understand the finer points of the geometry
before I start cutting timber.

Any help greatly appreciated.
