Having decided that I will build a single first, rather than the Bering
Strait double, I find myself going back to two designs; these are quite different
and I'd appreciate some wisdom from the list.

The designs are, first, LM 2-14886, the Aleut Baidarka from Zimmerly's SBJ
article, and second, CMCIV-E-1071, the Bering Sea Kayak, from National Museums
of Canada, Ottawa.

The first is attractive due to the great amount of written material and
because it is, well... attractive!!!

The second seems to offer a simpler build, having fewer parts and a simpler
bow structure. It also has more room for my size 14 feet, though I realize that
problem, in the Aleut, is easily fixable. We also have greater initial
stability for me as a newbie kayak user. And while it isn't nearly as eye-catching
as the Aleut, it is pretty in a different way... I woulnd't be ashamed to be
seen in it ;-)

Anyone out there built both? How would you compare their characteristics for
the touring paddler? For a beginner? The Bering is such a tubby little thing
in plan view, and I wonder if using a double paddle with this design would be
uncomfortable or tiring.
