I have used ash for ribs. That worked fine. One way to reduce weight
of a boat made entirely of ash would be to scale back thicknesses of
all the pieces that are made of 3/4 to something less.

I don't know how much to scale back. You would have to read through
some charts that compare relative stiffness of different woods. You
could then slim up pieces appropriately to reduce weight while still
maintaining strength.
