Subject: [baidarka] Broken Gunwale Scarf Joint... Recoverable?

While having my wife check the lines on a rib for me, I was demonstrating
how strong the frame was.
I leaned on the frame and the scarf joint at the center of the gunwale gave
(despite 4 dowels and an epoxy join).
Gaaaahhh!!!
So the slightly more rational question/response is:
Can this be recovered?
More importantly, should it?
Despite the frustration level, I have no problem rebuilding the deck, my
safety is at stake after all...
If I do rebuild it, how do y'all think I should make the new scarfs?
(Given that a Brinck Baidarka (by the book) has 14'10" gunwales)
(Getting 16' lengths is out as an option.)
Option 1: 3'10" + 8' + 3'
Option 2: 4'10" + 10'
Others?
The ribs had been planned to be rounds, but given that I've gone through 20
or so with no success, I was switching to rectangular ribs (which I have
actually made work). I suspect this is what weakened the area near the
lashings and allowed it to crack.

Images are a bit large (600k) because I wanted good detail.
Thanks VERY for any help you may be able to offer.
