Joe:
A year ago I covered both my kayaks in cotton Duck (not #10 canvas) only
because I was impatient and it was easily available and on sale (3$/yd) at
the local fabric store. It is ok but definetiley not the best. The weave is
to loose and cosecuently when you stretch it around hard angles (stem and
stern plates specificaly) it is thined considerably. As time pases these
areas are most suceptible to organic creatures of all ilk. Should have seen
some of the flora colors on mine- - -wow! The only thing holding it
together there after a year was the tripolimer coating I used. I have had
to cut the affected area out and re patch it. I will be lucky if I get an
other year out of it. Were I to do it again I would likeley use Sunbrella,
the stuf used for biminy tops on boats. It feels and looks like
cotton/canvas but is acrilic, and thus though not impervious to organic
growth it is not likely to decay at the rate of cotton. I did some test
patches coated w/ floor paint and it is real tough. Prices I've seen around
are about 8 to 10$ /yd (US) and I can get it from my local store front
awning maker.
It is available in some groovy colors to, though not anything close to
natural animal hide.
