Subject: [baidarka] knot question for the experts
A knot question for you wood expert-engineer types, or anyone else who
wants to weigh in
I have 4 nearly perfect VG green boards that I want to scarf to make 2
gunnels. The one imperfection is a small knot that runs top to bottom of
one board, never showing on the wide face of the board. The knot is 1/4
inch dia on top and 3/8 on botton, is 3 feet in from one end. the
gunnels
are 3/4 inch thick, so it just barely attains half the thickness.
The way I see it,and due to the particulars of the other baords, I have
3 choices.
a) not worry about it and have the knot end up either several feet aft
of
the scarf or several feet from the rear gunnel end. This is my preferred
choice, but I dont know if this type of knot is high risk or low risk to
cause problems if left as is
b) run my scarf through the knot, thereby actually strengthening (?)
that
part of the board. I dont know if this is sound reasoning or not and is
not my # 1 choice if I'm to match the scarf location on the other
gunnel.
(Which I s'pose is not necessary but I'd like to)
c) do 2 scarfs on one gunnel, completely removing the knot. This might
sound good, but is not a preferred choice because I dont trust my scarfs
as much as you do. ;-)
Finding another board of similar moisture content to replace the knotty
one will probably be impossible, because these are green boards and I'm
having trouble finding other green wood right now.
