There's 'stretch wrap' and 'shrink wrap'. Douglas is probably refering to
the former, which is applied by hand or by machine with tension. This is
used in a lot of warehouses, and smaller rolls are available from
packing/shipping suppy houses, and maybe even your local Mail Boxes Etc.
The latter gets heated to shrink it tight, and is less common, and harder
to find.

Speaking of indigenous materials, I was in a Home Depot recently and
noticed the fabric strapping they use instead of the steel or plastic
strapping to unitize loads. This stuff was about 3/4 of an inch wide and
easily separated into individual strands, which I assume is polyester. It
may go by the trade name 'Carry Strap', or something like that. It might
be a source for free (scrap) sewing thread.
