Hi Ralph,
Thanks for the abrasion/puncture info. Very interesting.
I've never partially coated a cloth skin first, "on the flat", and then
added more coatings
after the skin was on the frame. However, I have applied 15% Xylene thinned
coats of neoprene
to a sewn polyester folding skin which does come close to full saturation,
and then removed the skin and added
additional coats of thinned Neoprene to the inside of the skin. This
appears to fully saturate
the fibers. Don't know if this qualifies as complete fiber saturation, or
complete weave filling.
Feathercraft used to claim that their hypalon/polyester skins were pressure
treated to assure complete saturation.
The PVC skins I now make definitely don't have fiber saturation. When
testing the strength of H-66 Vinyl cement
hull to deck adhesion, I've had the PVC delaminate from the polyester cloth
samples before the glue seam failed.
This was the desired result by the way.
The exposed cloth showed no saturation. I might add however that the
delaminating requires considerably more force than will ever be experienced
in actual on water use. We're talking about pliers being used to literally
rip the glued pieces apart.
