Ralph:
I suppose it is hard to set a standard. I don't know if I could ever even
attempt to
accomplish what is expected of comercial folding boats in terms of abrasion
and puncture resistance. I am contemplating a greenland folder built using
some of the ideas so creatively executed by both Mr Yost and Maroske bros.
I think from my limmited understanding that really the only way to come
even close to what commercial folding boat manufactures accomplish would be
to use a coated PVC truck tarp type material. What I did with the Geocel on
my 2 SOFs can't even come close. I guess it was more of an experiment as I
came accross the stuff at the lumberyard quite by accident and decided to
try it. I also used a lower grade of fabric to begin with. Likely half as
heavy as #10 canvas. Impetuous as I am I used what was available without to
much legwork. It has worked so far for me. I may use the geocel again but I
would likely go with a heavier cotton or better yet a polyester. I did find
that with proper thinning and saturation it is close to impossible to
separate the coating from the fabric and the fabric will actualy tear
before it scrapes the coating of. The combination of the two being stronger
than the individual parts. But as I have not used polyurethane finish or
polyester fabric I do not know how that compares in the long run. I trust
your conclussion in regards to the comparison between the two.
