Subject: [baidarka] Maiden voyage and questions

Finally got up the nerve to take my canvas-covered Brinck baidarka for a
test drive in the local pond yesterday. First impressions:
It's much more stable than I was led to believe by other forum builders
(it's 1" wider than stock);
It's more difficult for one person to carry down to the water than it's
weight would suggest, due to lack of handholds and the balance point being
1-2' forward of the cockpit;
It's quite comfortable in terms of seating position, but I definitely need
4-5" of support under the knees (any suggestions for what to use?);
Making a dry exit with only the tip of the bow on shore is not something to
try for the first time with an audience;
Dark patches appeared on the canvas wherever water had come into contact
with the inside of the skin, which have since disappeared (is this normal
and will it significantly increase the weight of the boat if it overturns?).
Any suggestions or comments are welcome. Photos for those who haven't seen
them are here:
