All retail fabric you buy has some sort of finish or treatment that will
make both the shaping over the frame difficult and will likely result in the
sealant peeling off sooner than the untreated fabric.

Sail cloth will certainly work, for a while [as almost any cloth would, the
natives used leather after all!]. You would simply have to recoat or touch
up (or replace!) more often. Though it is enough work to recover that it
worth finding the unfinished goods. This you may find locally, you might
look locally for the suppliers of industrial filter cloth (they usually sell
very large quantities, so you have to find someone sympathetic to your
needs, or to give you a 4 yard "sample"). Look in your local yellow pages
and start calling around for polyester filter fabric. Otherwise, Dyson is
the best person I know of to get it from.
