I'm somewhere between the two camps on this one.
I believe a footrest is beneficial, although I can paddle perfectly well
(but not flat out) without.
I have abandoned footrests that contact the balls of my feet on sea boats,
but use them on white water and surf.
My sea boats all have 4 inch thick ethafoam blocks across the floor that
allows me flexible bracing with heel and instep sufficient to sprint at full
efficiency. This allows me to flex my feet, and also to use the "white
man's invention" of a rudder (and before anyone suggests it, I was a good
competion canoe paddler, so I do know how to paddle steer). I developed
this foot-brace before I became interested in skin boats, where effectively
the same system is used, and believe it allows more efficient body rotation.
