Throughout Robert Morris's book Building Skin on Frame Boats he
recommends NYLON multifiliment for lashing. I have found both polyester
and nylon artificial sinew available.
You wrote..."Avoid nylon, especially for lashings! "
So, is Morris wrong to recommend this? I just ordered a roll of Nylon
artificial sinew to lash my boat.
Is the stretch involved in the short distances involved in a typical
nylon lashing significant enough to allow
the lashing to fail? If I apply tension to the line while lashing,
making it stretch, won't it be tighter because it
will also shrink back? How about prestretching the line before lashing?
Isn't some flexibility desired in the joint?
I suspect either fiber will work but there may be variations needed in
such things as how tight things are pulled and the knots used. Since I
have no direct experience with either. I am guessing and seek advice
from others
with practical experience using both.
