Peter,
OK, I was thinking that you insert lots of ribs as in a conventional
baidarka, but you are making up thicker sections, and using less like in a
production folding kayak, say seven sections?
I'm builiding a proa at the moment with Tom Yost's style of building with
HDPE sections, but my next boat will be a five foot wide sailboat, and the
HDPE is too expensive/heavy. So I either have to learn to use that Holsclaw
bender or laminate. I did try making a retrieval kayak, but I did not have
much luck steam bending. I did laminate the Masik out of poplar, and that
came out wonderful.
Has anyone tried making ribs of laminations without using a form, say
fitting them up in the gunnels and trimming to fit, and then gluing
together, or will glue end up in the slots, preventing the flexibility we
are looking for?
Thanks,
Paul
