I now have his Baidarka book, so that all sounds correct. My usual supplier
for rocket-related metal needs here in San Jose is Metal Supermarkets, so I
figured I'd tap them first for the tube for my baidarka. They seem to think
that .049 is an in between size and they would need to special order it at
additional cost. I will probably go heavier rather than lighter, since I
have some ideas for sailing experiments that will probably stress the boat
quite a bit.

The more I think about it, the better I like the idea of some kind
of crimp or indent to hook them in. It avoids having to grind off the oxide
layer (so epoxy will stick) and it avoids any question about galvanic
corrosion that fasteners could cause. Since I already have a tubing cutter
of the right size, making a roll crimper from it should be pretty easy.
