I've been experimenting with aluminum flat aft deck folding kayaks, and have
found that as both the peak of the aft deck, and the overall deck height is
reduced, there is a decrease in rigidity. Pretty obvious I would guess.

However, the flex is off-set in several ways. The coamings are very
rigid, and are "hard" attached to the fore and aft deckridge by bolts the go
through the front and rear of the coaming, the deckridge, and the cross
section. This creates quite a rigid deckridge, and adds to the overall hull
strength and rigidity.

In addition, I add "snap" in "inwales" nearly the length of the gunwale to
increase rigidity, and use 8 cross sections instead of my normal 6 on a boat
of this length ( 17+ft.). The net result of these changes, is to allow the
construction of folding kayaks with extremely low aft deck heights.

The Sea Rover "rolling" kayak frame pictured has an aft deck height of 4.75"
and a peak of 9.5". The freeboard is under 1 inch. The HDPE coaming base
plate is shown, but the carbon fiber coaming is not yet attached.

Keep in mind that the aluminum stringers are "snapped" in place, so there
are no rigid lashed and glued connections like those in many non-folding
aluminum frames for added rigidity. Plus, the gunwales aren't nearly as large
as the wooden ones in "traditional" construction.

If this kayak has adequate rigidity, then a flat aft deck traditional
Baidarka should be a piece of cake !
