IMO Water based poly urethane technology is just not up to speed
yet.(note the operative word is YET) And in so far as I have seen in the
industry that seems to be the consensus.
As someone who refinishes betwen 18 to 20 thousand sq ft of hardwood floors
a yr I can tell you for first hand experience. Water based PUs are not any
were as durable and become brittle much sooner.
I will not use it unless a client absolutely demands it. I have used it and
regereted it multiple times. And had to go back and re-do floors becauce of
it.
Oil based PUs retain more flexibilty and contain more solids. The higher
gloss have the highest solids content, and will yield the best results in
terms of durability, UV protection, and water impermeability.
Yes they are smelly, and impply more polution and or waste, but longer life
of oil base will compensate for this. Use disposable brushes and don't
bother w/ solvents if polution is an issue.
just my two pennies worth,
michael.
