Bruce, it may be sugi or it could be pine. If it is sugi, you are in
luck. That is "Japanese cedar", and it should have excellent rot
resistance. It is the mainstay of building construction here, and some
of those buildings are over 800 years old. There is extreme humidity
here, so the trees tend to be pretty resistant to weather damage. We
have many cedar forests on this island (Shikoku).
