I agree varnish is ultimately the best solution if it is properly applied,
and that IS the operative word.
I does require periodic re-finishing and the multiple joints and
perforations on a kayak frame make that rather hard if not impossible to do
thoroughly. And even if accoplished the inherent flexing of the lashed frame
would tend to open up locations where water could penetrate.
I have yet to se a lashed frame varnished and ususaly in all I have read it
has been discouraged for the reason I spoke of.
For what it is worth I do not coat my frames, I just slosh them once in a
while w/ glycol when I spot a problem w/ organic growth.

I don't know but if anyone has it would have to be Tom Yost. I know that
recently he has developed a line of greenland design folders which are qute
apealing. He has a single chine baidarka type w/ a deep V hull as well I
believe is a non folder.
