Subject: [baidarka] Anyone else see this on Ebay?

Hi!
I'm new to the list and have been following with interest all of the
discussions on
technique. I have a couple of questions of my own but thought I'd start
off by asking if
anyone else out there has seen this little gem:

Any ideas about this thing? I'm not interested in buying but will probably
watch to see if
there are any takers. Do you suppose it's real? I'm on the fence about
that myself but
tend to be a cynic on my best days.
As for my own technical questions they mostly center around selecting green
wood for
ribs. I live on the north coast of Maine (spitting distance of Canada
practically - and if it
were polite to spit at one's neighbors) and there is no willow up
here. But I have access
to virtually unlimited quantites of both red and white birch, alder,
poplar, aspen, cedar
and ash. My guess is that even young cedar is out for bending. I can get
all of these in
various thicknesses and lengths within a few hundred feet of the house. So:
What do I pick? And at what thickness? Can I just substitute what I've
seen folks say
about willow to any of these others?
I'm contemplating making seperate trials by constructing coracles from both
types of
birch, the ash, the alder, the poplar and the aspen simply for the practice
before putting
ribs into my baidarka.
It would be time consuming but, since the point for me is to learn, learn,
learn, I can't
think of a better way to spend my time.
Any ideas, responses or info is welcome - even if you're telling me I'm crazy.
