When I first arrived in Los Angeles I used to go swimming the first
sunny day after the rain stopped. I had to swim around lawn clippings
and lots of plastic baggies and styrofoam and other bits of trash. I
was doing this about one block from the Pico Storm drain.
This wasn't smart. I didn't get anything. I wouldn't swim in that
water after a rain, but I would paddle in it if I didn't plan on doing
any rolls.

A current 'truism' is that storm drains carry lots of e coli bacteria
from Homeless people. There's lot of e coli carried by storm drain run
off, but it's from pets, mostly dogs.

A guy I used to know at my Masters Swimmer group told me he contracted
a 2 1/2 year long disease (I think it was schistomiasis could have been
something else) ocean swimming right after a storm in Costa Rica.

So we do need to think about the water but not fear it.
