Well, my 21" beam baidarka was the second kayak I'd ever sat in, and the
first one was a whitewater boat in a swimming pool! For a heavier guy
like me (220lbs) who can sink the boat down to its lines, baidarkas are
plenty stable. The only time I've capsized unintentionally was working
on braces and sculling, which either put me way, way out to the side or
else just pulled me under.

The thing about baidarkas is that with the round bottom they have little
or no primary stability--they will easily rock a small amount. As they
heal over more they start to harden up, and will push themselves back
upright if you give them a chance (or help them with a quick brace).
The fuller hull behind the paddler (compared with a greenland boat)
undoubtedly helps.

And that narrow, round hull isn't affected too much by waves.

But you're still better off learning to roll.
