This is slightly counter-intuitive, but if you take a segmented keel
and lash it tightly, it will act just like a single piece keel.
If you lash the keelson loosely, then each segment will be stiffer
than a single longer keelson and flexing will be concentrated at the
joints. picture a three piece fly rod with loose ferrules.
