Dear Mike, and all,
I cant see how a jointed keel could be as stiff as a
single-piece keel. The joints are rather short and
will flex unless lashed with steel cable. The
keelson is as you said just one part of the overall
structure, but at the same time, several other
key-elements of the structure are also designed to
flex and shift in conjunction with the keelson.

There are no 'significant numbers' of baidarkas to
test-- at least numbers built consistently as replicas
using the same materials and coatings. I've been
meaning to photo-document flex-tests of my two-hole
baidarka, as it is dramatically flexible. If I had an
exact copy with the same skin, etc. and with a single
keel and no other 'looser' joints, this would be a
good test-- or at least a start.
