I have lost the sock several times. Once it tangled me up pretty good but I
still had the paddle so I could stay upright and kicked it off. I ended up
making my own out of canvas and sewed 2" Velcro down the sides and top of
the outside of the bag. I glued the hook side inside the boat. This keeps it
off your knees when you are in the boat. I also sewed in a bolt rope all the
way around the mouth that works like a draw string but that is not enough so
I also lash it with a couple of wraps of parachute cord before I snap the
skirt on.

It is an older Seda and has no bulkheads. I also have flotation in the bow
and stern. I kind of go on the premise that it is good to have backups on
your backups. As far as gear floating around in the sock. I have a small
rolltop bag I stick under my knees and I just buckle it right trough the
webbing on the sock. I live in southern california and do go out without the
skirt snapped on though and on those hot summer days the sock can be a
nuisance. Other than that it has been good to me and come this fall when I
can get back to building a boat instead of a house I will definitely use
this method for my SOF and build a coaming with a substantial lip.

FYI, Matt Broze does recommend sea socks for use in the unbulkheaded Mariner
hulls. That is the only hull I have tried them in. But Matt has certainly
walked his talk, so I do pass along his recommendations. The Mariner hulls
do have a good overlapping cockpit rim that holds the sea sock very
securely, much more so than most of our baidarkas.
