Quite right. Kayaks developed as a grim necessity of a hunter class (who were prepared for their life's work from age 4 with stretching and strengthening exercizes in the community longhouse), who knew the risks, or if they didn't they and the community needed to eat anyway. Consider the area that these craft developed. Barren rock outcroppings with little to no resourses ashore, and plentious game off shore in what is arguably the most turbulent and volitile water on the planet. That we have any record of baidarkas at all is a testimony to these Aleut hunter's unbelievable prowess and understanding of their environs.

true enough. Rescues developed for bulkheaded fiberglass boats don't
necessarily work for skin on frame boats.
But, I think that anyone who builds a replica of a native boat ought
to consider developing some native type skills like rolling or good
judgement not to go out on water they can't stay upright in.
I think the accusation that skin on frame boats are less safe than
bulkheaded fiberglass boats is unfounded. Kayaks are inherently
unsafe. Only the skill and good judgement of the paddler makes the
kayak safe, not its equipment.
