No they actually do not make any real ridges. If you look for the bump you
can see it but it is hardly there. As you see from the pictures I cut the
foam to fit before skinning to get the right profile the caulk does the
final seal. Using the minicell allows you to have a flexible material to
flex within the frame for final installation after the boat is skinned.
Presumably you could use 1/8th inch ply if you installed it as you built the
frame and then caulked after skinning. (make a cardboard pattern first) The
advantage of installing the foam afterwards is that you do not have any
ridges to interfere w/ skin coatings that would leave a visible external
line.
The other method that was developed by Pavia Lumhod (
http://www.qajaqusa.org/QUSA/bio_pavia.html) in Greenland is the fabric
bulkead.
For the method see:
http://www.paavia.dk/Bulkhead.htm
As I pointed out in a baidarka w/ the multiple chines it could be a more
involved project but it should be possible to accomplish. Of course hatches
of some sort would be necessary to access and vent the compartments. In my
case with the minicel foam it was handy to have the hatches to aid in final
installation of the bulkhead.
