I fish out of a 14'by 22" SOF baidarka. I generally jig for rock fish and
ling using a hand line or mooch for Salmon or go deeper for halibut using a
short lightweight rod I built. I use a self leveling mini saltwater reel
with the rod since a spinning reel hangs down into the spray skirt and is
awkward. tackle goes in a small locking plastic box between my legs and fish
go between my legs also (knock out the fish so it doesn't "vibrate" against
the hull and keep the blood inside the boat where it hopefully wont attract
unwanted attention. All the gear is tethered, it is kept below deck when not
in use. This requires occasionally peeling back the side of the spray skirt
but this is not an issue since if it is too rough to reach inside the skirt
then its probably to rough to comfortably fish. When the line is in the
water the skirt is sealed so that i can roll if things get out of hand. My
biggest concern is the fact that i am located in the red triangle and am a
sitting duck when fishing. I have tried trolling and it is a drag (literally
and figuratively).
