I know guys that frequently paddle in ice. They have fashioned some
ice picks out of old screwdrivers. They ground the tips to a point
and drilled holes in the handles. Through the holes, they put some
short lines to tie the picks to the bungies on the foredeck so the
picks don't get lost. With the picks readily available, they can do
things like a fast seal landing - they drop the (tethered) paddle and
grab the picks off the deck and immediately start dragging themselves
across the ice. Recommended.
I've also seen guys make an ice pick for the end of the paddle blade -
IIRC, Bill Mason has an example in one of his books for canoe
paddles.
As far as rope goes - at this time, carrying a throw rope should be
considered essential.
