Excellent video!
I have made 3 sets of Greenland paddles from Western Red Cedar. A set
consists of a regular length paddle and a shorter storm paddle.
Being one of the laziest people I know, I simplified the design a bit. My
paddles are thinned only on one side. The other side is flat. I also
simplified the shape with just one taper from the loom to the end of the
paddle, no shoulders. The ends of the paddles are about 1/4 inch thick. To
protect them, I added piece of PVC piping cut lengthwise from the pipe to the
same dimension as the paddle ends. They are glued and doweled on with 1/8"
dowels set at an angle.
WRC is great since it needs no finishing, but you do have to careful with the
saw dust, etc. I am told that it is not good to breath so I wear a mask when
cutting or sanding it.
I thought the paddles might last a season, but 4 years later they are still
fine. A few dings have been sanded out and one of the authentic PVC bone tips
feel off because I did not originally angle the dowels, but that was easily
replaced.
