I find that glossy finishes on a paddle are "stickier" than oil or matte
finishes. Wet a finger and rub it over glass. Feel it stick and release,
stick and relase? You get the same effect with a gloss finish on a paddle,
and that means blisters. I finish my paddles with tung oil (boiled linseed
oil also works well) and try not to build up too many layers, so it feels
like bare wood rather than plastic, and I hardly ever develop blisters
when paddling barehanded.
It also helps not to grip the paddle tightly.
