I'm a transplanted Eastern boy and love eating seal. Never had it raw,
though, even when I lived up North. My dad's a fisherman out here on the
west coast and I think he tried the local variety of sea one time. Not at
all the same. I think the warm water out here must change the meat some,
plus they eat WAY different stuff here. Sea lion is a totally different
animal. Don't know anyone who's tried that.
We don't have 'reindeer' in Canada, though caribou skins may be similar;
just a lot bigger and thicker. I know they SMELL like a lab overdue for a
bath as my dad had a suit made of raw hides while we lived up there. The
local hunters had it made for him as a gift. The ears left on the hood
signified a great hunter (my dad was the game warden). Damn thing had to be
kept in the deep freeze so the hair wouldn't fall out.
As far as igloos go, the only one I've been in (that I can remember) was
one built as a school project by the high school kids in the settlement
where we lived. It had five separate rooms, the center one being a
great-room with about a 15ft ceiling. Never could figure out why they had a
pile of willow branches in a niche of the main entry for firewood. It had
ice windows, too.
