Wattle and daub house building isn't by any means the mainstay of the willow
industry in the UK. Nowadays woven fencing using 'withies' (very thin
willow branches - one season's growth?) is popular, and if you drop by any
garden centre you'll find dozens of willow products like 'obelisks' for
climbing plants, baskets and so on.
Still big business in the UK!
Kayak builders can benefit by buying their willow branches from a commercial
retailer - available in a number of diameters, including kayak-rib size. It
saves a lot of hassle getting permission from land-owners to 'prune' their
willows.
Oh yes - and there's that peculiar game that takes days to play and involves
a bat made from a large chunk of willow . . .
