While soaking does allow easy bending, it does seem to loosen the
grain. We split up to 30% of the ribs, usually starting with just a
few top grains loosening up. I will often ignore those, but if it
goes just a bit further, "crack". I do not know if steaming would
lessen this effect, but I suspect that the less water, the less
tendency to split like this. Still, we just cut extra yellow cedar
and have at it.
