The main factor in carving turns, I have learned, is the chine
immediately aft of the cockpit. One of the best hulls for carving was
the Mariner Max, which started life as a baidarka shape and retained
much of that in the bow. But under the cockpit, the hull transitions
into a medium-soft chine and holds that until sweeping up aft into a
reasonable approximation of a baidarka stern. Matt could do coasting
S turns in this hull. I never got that good with it, but I could get
a nice response in one direction.
