There were a number of POW camps. One was near (in?) Algonquin
Provincial Park. A member of my kayak club was there after being
captured serving on a U-Boat. He said it was the best thing that
ever happened to him! He spent the rest of the war with three meals
a day, a warm bed, working as a lumberjack and spending time in the
Canadian wilderness. When the war ended, he tried to stay, but was
repatriated. The next few years were spent trying to return to
Canada and he's lived here ever since (very much like the guy in a
video clip referenced below).
