David,
You have probably seen many of the build photos on my website which is
not on the net anymore. Unfortunately I changed my ISP and haven't put
the site up again. I was going to include more pages before doing so,
but haven't yet. I might just put it up again as is for your reference.
I made my Hooper Bay a bit smaller than the original. I scaled down the
whole boat then lowered the deck a bit in order to use an Aleut paddle.
The coaming comes up to just under my armpits. The original must be like
sitting in an open top car. You are right about the initial stability,
it's a bit unstable if you're not used to it. It would probably behave
better loaded. A friend has an umiak which is almost impossible to
capsize but feels very twitchy when you first get in. After a while you
just go with the flow; it's the same with the Hooper Bay.
Solidworks is not a Mac graphics program, its a PC based engineering
program and will export DXF. I believe Rhino can import many formats and
will probably import native Solidworks files. If not, STEP, STL or IGES
would be better than DXF.
