Just joined a few days ago, so I thought I'd post a quick intro. I also
joined the forums over at QajaqUSA as well, but there looks to be a lot of
great baidarka-specific info here as well. I hope that there is not so much
member cross-over that this is redundant.
I'm building my first SOF boat, a baidarka inspired by Tom Yost's 'Nikumi'
but with modified dimensions and a decidedly non-traditional spin on the
frame construction. The frame will be mostly plywood, with the components
cut out with a CNC router. I design furniture for a living, and there is a
lot of inspiration from modern upholstery frame construction evidenced by
all the interlocking joints. Chine stringers may be rattan pole, aluminum
tubing, plastic - haven't gotten that far just yet. Latest revision has the
boat at 13' x 22" beam, 8" keel to shear line. The split bow was left out
for easier skinning. A lot shorter and a bit wider than the traditional
baidarkas, but I'm a complete paddling newbie and looking for something
relatively easy to handle.
You can see some renderings and the frame design here:

"P3 revised (again...)")
I've pretty much got the frame worked out and have it ready to be run on the
CNC router; now I'm working through the various skinning options to balance
low-cost, ease of application, and durability (it appears that one only gets
to pick two of those attributes, however).
