He should also consider sending out press releases and photos. Many of
the same magazines he might want to advertise in would be interested in
quality photos of the kayaks with interesting description of the
building process, using the kayaks for trips, types of people building
them (school kids? Seniors? Iraq vets?).
Very often you'll get a better response from customers from a photo
published as 'news' than from an ad.
I had a client who used to hire me to photograph her with her latest
art sale idea. Time and time again the local paper would run a full
page on her and her project and people would be lined up at the door.
Small businesses should look into 'marketing' and 'guerilla marketing'
(though there are a lot of things in guerilla marketing that are forms
of littering and vandalism). Often buying ad space is a way to keep the
phone & contact information handy while a semi-annual article in the
magazine does the selling.
Also think about local newspapers and other non-kayaking non-boating
outlets for marketing. Sea Kayaking seems to have a lot of ads for
homebuilts, but I haven't seen them featured in very many articles.
They clearly need to support their commercial kayak manufacturing
advertisers--it's just a fact of life. But a non-boat/kayak outlet
won't have any such limitations.
My intro to kayaking was seeing the L Bean commercial during the tour
de France, I spent two minutes looking at their website--then started
goggling everything I could find. I settled into Nick Schade's
Guillemot site and built his design. I wanted to build a Greenland or
Baidarka--but didn't think they would hold up.
Good luck to your friend.
