Hi James:

I share your love of Japanese architecture and construction. I have
probably very little knowledge though..........my book habit has
inched into the realm of basic Japanese woodworking techniques, shoji
screens, but not "full on"construction/architecture.

I am amazed by their vernacular farm homes and the sensitivity
displayed to site and the indoor/outdoor interface.

I have heard stories of what it is like to be an intern over
there......a year or two just learning to sharpen tools.
Rather different than our "here today gone tomorrow" throw away
culture of "gotta have it now".......

The mainstream homes being built here in the States are so brutal in
their relationship with the land and in their gluttonous use of
materials and resources. I like the sensibility that the Japanese
employ....there is a genuine attention to how people use structures
and how structures make people feel.

If you could recommend a good primer on Japanese traditional
construction (residential), I'd be indebted to you.
Enjoyed your post.
