Bill:
I have a Brinck's baidarka. When I first learned to roll I was using a c to c
roll. I could get the boat almost upright but had to scull to get all the way
up. I really had to concentrate on my hip snap and keeping my head down to
make it work. Later I added hip pads and rolling became easier and instead of
sculling just a swept forward did the trick. Now I use a cross between a c to
c roll and a screw roll. I don't extend my body as in a c to c but stay tucked
on the forward deck. I sweep just enough to bring my body closer to the
surface, maybe out 50-60 degrees from the bow with an extended paddle then a
good strong hip snap and sweep forward staying tucked and keeping my ear to my
shoulder and looking at the paddle. I can't do a reverse sweep in this boat.
In my normal paddling position my thighs are too far back to connect with the
deck beam in front of me. So when upside down I have to move forward before I
setup for my roll. If you are use to being upside down in your boat this is
not hard and only takes a couple of seconds. I sweep with the ridge side of my
paddle down just because that is the position it is in when I paddle.
Best
Jim
