The Kayak Roll is a Kent Ford video which can be purchased online very
cheap in VHS format or at a regular price for the DVD. My local library
also has it, which is very convenient. :-)
The roll is a sweep roll with the paddle in a rather upright (not leaned
back) finish position, so it does not require a particularly low back
deck. The set-up position is like other rolls, such as a regular sweep
roll or a C-to-C roll. The sweep begins, and the paddler unwinds as the
sweeping blade is extended out from the kayak. When the paddle is
perpendicular to the boat, the paddler is almost all of the way up. The
is because torso-rotation is gradually righting the boat as in a normal
sweep roll. As the paddle passes the cockpit, the paddler is up, the
head has just raised from the water, and the eyes are looking down the
shaft of the paddle. The control hand sheds resistance as the finish
position is assumed. The paddler is able to see the stern of the kayak,
with torso twisted toward it, but the back is straight up, not leaned
back. (The cheek is against the shoulder, the arms are tucked in close
to the body.)
