Subject: [baidarka] Question about mortise and tenons?

I hope this isn't a really stupid question.
I am building my first Greenland SOF and using Cunningham's book as a
reference.
It looks to me like he places the tenons at the edge of the deck beams
well at least on the ones that are towards the ends of the kayak.
Is this the best way to do it or should I try to place them in the
centre of the beams?
