The U.S.S. Maine from which Lawrence flew his kites in 1905 is
not the vessel of Spanish-American War fame ("Remember the Maine!"). This newer
vessel was launched in 1901. Since I had a copy of the 1913 Naval Annual
I looked up a few particulars about the ship and
have included them below. A battleship was selected
for tests because it would give more room on the rear deck to handle the kites.
